Q: Is accommodation included?

A: No it isn’t.  This is so you can choose how long you want to stay in each location. You can book your accommodation yourself before you start your trip or you can use our web app. We recommend booking at least a few days in advance at peak times as hostels hold allotments for Loka but will release these 1-2 days out. Check Loka’s pick up times and places document for a list of Lokas’s departure points.

Q: How much does accommodation cost?

A: The average price for a multi-share dorm room is about $32, but accommodation varies from place to place along the coast.  Dorm options start at around $22 and can range as high as $55 during peak/holiday season.

Q: Do I need to book my accommodation in advance?

A: You can book your accommodation in advance if you want to (we advise looking at the locations we pick up from before booking anything) or you can wait to start your trip.  We organise your first few nights out of Sydney (Barrington Tops, Spot X and River Retreat), and your first night out of Cairns (Magnetic Island).  In peak season (Christmas, January, School Holidays, Easter etc), we recommend booking your accommodation in the more popular destinations (Byron Bay, Noosa, Airlie Beach) at least a few days in advance to ensure availability.  Our preferred accommodation places do hold us allocations but these are released 48 hours before arrival in peak season.   We can help you book your accommodation through our web app or through your guide.

Q: Can I change my departure date?

A: Absolutely! You change your departure date as late as 5pm the day before departure (preferably 24 hours in advance for rail sectors between Noosa/Rainbow Beach and Cairns).  You can change your date by:

  • Emailing
  • Cancelling your booking in the web app (clicking on the x at the right-side of your screen) and booking yourself back on a different departure day (but you’ll need to do this at least 24 hours before your scheduled departure).
  • Calling our office at (+61) 02 6698 4901

Q: How long can I hop off for?

A: Our passes are valid for up to 1 year, so as long as you complete your pass within 12 months, you can hop off for as long as you want, as many times as you want!

Q: What is ‘flexible travel’ and/or ‘hop on hop off’?

A:  This means you have the flexibility to get on and off at any of our stops and stay longer.  Your pass is valid for 12 months so you can even jump off to work or study for awhile and then just jump back on the next Loka departure coming through the destination.

Q: Can I get off at any train stop?

A: Yes if you’d like to hop off a train station not listed on the regular Loka itinerary as an overnight stop (such as Bundaberg, Maryborough,  Miriam Vale etc), just email  We recommend booking these sectors in advance especially during peak periods (Christmas/New Years/School Holidays) to ensure availability.

Q: Can I travel to other destinations on the East Coast not listed on the Loka itinerary?

A: Possibly, depending on location we can either drop you off at the nearest bus stop or train station and/or have suggestions on how to get there.  Please email to find out more. We’re happy to help plan your itinerary and figure out the best travel options for you!

Q: Do you have WIFI on your buses?

A: No we don’t have WIFI on our buses and that’s for a number of reasons:

  • It doesn’t work all the way up the coast so we could offer it but you still couldn’t access it everywhere and at a decent speed  (that’s the same for other bus companies who promote they offer it )
  • We like you to talk to each other, share stories and make friends. Rather than bury your heads in your phones, this way your experience becomes even more memorable!

Q: How much should I budget per day?

A: This is up to the individual as you can sleep in the cheapest dorm,  self-cater* and not do any extra activities and you could spend $60 – 70 per day.  You could also stay in your own room*, eat at cafes/restaurants for every meal, and do every activity possible and spend up $300-$400 some days!

*Loka’s special stops are an exception as your dorm/camping accommodation, dinner and breakfast is usually $60 per person, or $75 – $120 with activities included.

Q: What extra activities should I budget for?

A: This is completely up to you but many activities such as guided walks, kayaking (summer only), beach activities and wine tasting (northbound) are already included in your Loka pass.

  • If you are short on time and money, we’d recommend trying to do at least a one day sailing trip in the Whitsunday Islands and/or a one day trip to Fraser Island (approx $300 for both).
  • If you have some time and some money, we’d recommend a 1-3 day sailing trip in the Whitsundays, a 1-3 day Fraser Island trip, a 1 day trip to the Great Barrier Reef, a skydive, perhaps a kayak trip or Nimbin trip in Byron Bay and/or a Surf & Stay at Spot X Surf Camp. (approx $1200 – $1500 for everything depending on the length of your Fraser and Whitsunday trips).
  • If you have plenty of time and a decent amount of money, we’d recommend a 2-3 day sailing trip in the Whitsundays, a 2-3 day Fraser Island trip, a 1 day trip to the Great Barrier Reef, a trip to Cape Tribulations, rafting in Tully, a Surf and Stay at Spot X Surf Camp, a kayak trip in the Noosa Everglades, a skydive, a kayak trip or Nimbin trip in Byron Bay (approx $1900 for everything).

Feel free to email us with any questions you may have and if you have anything in mind i.e. you want to do more surfing and/or want to see more wildlife and so on, and we can help cater an itinerary to suit your specific preferences, we can also get you discounts on some activities especially if you buy a few together.

Q: Why do we travel with guides?

A.  Your Loka guide is there to help point in the right direction, give you information on the places we visit and cool things to do there, and above all, make your Loka trip awesome!  If you’re a bit nervous about travelling and/or travelling by yourself they’ll be there to answer any questions you have, and help introduce you to the other Lokees (Loka travellers).

Q: What are the Loka guides like?

A. Forget boring, old bus drivers, Loka guides come from a crazy range of backgrounds – surfers, sailors, drummers, students, but mostly they’re people who love travelling and get a buzz from showing other travellers their favourite places.
