WHY TRAVEL WITH LOKA?
Smaller groups. We have maximum of 24 in a group. Be a name, not just a number and don’t feel herded around.
Better East Coast Stories. Don’t just tick the boxes and stare out a bus window for half your trip. Get off the beaten track, meet local characters, and have memories to last you a lifetime.
All of our trips are guided. We train locals to be your guides – the guide drives the bus on our own bus sections, and travels with you on other transport. They are there to help ensure you get the most out of your trip – point you in the right direction, provide commentary, find wildlife and most of all be your mate if you need any help (dance tips/travel advice) along the way…
Easy and Flexible. When you are travelling with us, you’ll be picked up from your Loka accommodation, be taken on walks, stop at cool places along the way… generally have a great adventure tour-type trip. You can hop off the bus/train at any stop and stay longer, just let us know (or book yourself via our web app) when you want to hop back on.
We work with local operators and communities to create sustainable, authentic experiences with positive change for all.
To change your plans and itinerary. You can hop off in and stay longer at any of our stops along the way as you want for up to 12 months.
Meet local Australians and other travellers, be part of our traveller community on and offline.
We are continually hunting out and creating our own authentic, off the beaten track, stop-overs and activities that aren’t in the guidebooks or on TripAdvisor.
Get the most out of your travels through local guides and Loka’s unique technology. Our fun and enthusiastic guides get involved with your travel experiences, and our web app provides destination info, activity/accommodation booking service, reviews from other travellers and the ability to book yourself on and off the Loka bus/transport.SMALLER
Smaller group sizes mean it’s easier to meet other travellers, you don’t feed herded around and it allows us to include connections to off the beaten track things which can’t be accessed by individuals travelling on public transport or with mainstream travel companies.
Mates From All Over the World
If you are into adventure and getting involved in your travel destination then Loka is for you. We don’t define by age, but our trips are pretty full on. We get travellers from all over the world; people travelling by themselves, as couples or in groups. Our average group size is 20, so you aren’t part of a crowd but always have people to share things with if you want.
Amazing Travel Routes
We go off the beaten track – whether in our own buses or on public transport (where we have local connections), to get us out to where we want to go. We don’t stick to the main routes or destinations and actively go out of our way for unique local activities and attractions.
Unique Local Places to Stay
To truly get off the beaten track and involved in places, we use a variety of options for sleeping – from country lodges, pubs to hostels/hotels and camping. These are identified in our itineraries. You will usually get a bed-only option (averaging $32 per person per night), a twin/double option (averaging $100 per room) or where, due to remoteness food has to be included, a bed, dinner, breakfast (and activities where applicable) option ($60-$120 per person).
We work with locals to find and develop authentic local experiences – yes you can still access Great Barrier Reef trips, Fraser Island, skydiving and bungy jumping from our trips – but even better you can walk in national parks, prepare a traditional meal with local indigenous people, spotlight wildlife in dense rainforest, ride an inner tube down a remote river, kayak in a marine park…
We can make a difference — we can change people’s lives — more information and flexible travel options will give people experiences that are so eye opening that they think about the environment, their place in the global economy, their impact on future generations, all while having a mind-blowing time.
Loka is a social enterprise – we work with small local operators where possible, we work with communities so that they are ready to accept visitors, we make social activity part of our content – we bring in new things as needed. We aim to bring benefits to the remote places we visit – you will be a crucial part of the actual benefits achieved through taking on local projects.
Our commitment to finding and training new people, as well as working with people in smaller communities to help them receive visitors in a sustainable way, brings huge benefit to people who often otherwise wouldn’t be involved in the tourism industry.
– Visiting communities in remote places benefits the regions, which often need it the most, while giving you the most authentic experience.
– Loka travellers, our guides, and people in the places we visit have the ability to submit ideas for things to do (or recommend things they’ve done). This gives you access to the widest range of activity options over our routes and helps ensure that we spread the financial benefits of your travel to many operators.
– Our technology platform allows you to get even more involved, if you wish, as it gives everyone a place to access and list everything from work experience and general volunteering to special projects where extra help is needed.
– Your reviewing and submitting of ideas ensures that other travellers can be as informed as possible of the options over our routes, all while ensuring that Loka is as authentic and fresh as it possibly can be.
